Grandpa and Grandma's Message to my Kids

It's been 10 long years since Grandpa and Grandma G. flew away to heaven within months of each other. I found this poem and note to my children from their Aunt Vicky just the other day while cleaning out some papers. I wanted to share it with, and dedicate it to everyone who has lost beloved people in their lives. May it bring some comfort to us all.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Dear Georgia and Victoria,
Grandma and Grandpa G. did not want us to remember them sadly, they wanted us to think of and remember happier times. I am sending you something to help you remember them both. I found copies of this poem all over their house. I believe that this was something they both cherished and wanted their family to read and be comforted by. I am sending windchimes to remind you, everytime the wind blows and you hear the melody of the chimes, that they loved you and wanted you to be happy. Think of having two more guardian angels to watch over you and keep you safe. You two had a very special place in their hearts. As long as we remember and love them, they will live on in our hearts. All my love - Your Aunt Vicky.

  2. I have heard those windchimes. They sing softly near your rock garden. There is something so very precious about the song they sing...how beautiful.

    I've been thinking a lot about my tiny one, Stirling Dow, who died 22 years ago yesterday,and Mr. Ernest who in 2002, flew to heaven as I stood beside his bed.

    Yesterday I spent most of the late afternoon and evening in the hospital with my darling husband--April 17th,is his birthday. He is fine, and will be doing better now that he has antibiotics...

    I was just struck by all the important things which have happened on that day through the years...

    Thank you for sharing Aunt Vicky's words. I know I will not hear the chimes in the back yard in the same way from now on.

    ((hugs))
